With fear you sit down, a voice screams in your head. This is the moment that either makes you or breaks you. You look around, searching for an escape but can’t find any. This isn’t a war but it is a battlefield.

Many students go into the SAT test room feeling fear and anxiety. Today there are tools to help students prepare for this life changing exam. Countless books have been printed on the subject and companies have made CD-ROMs to help a student accomplish those goals.

Now there is a new advance in this field. SAT vocabulary…on the go! It’s a CD called “Pop Vocab” and it uses pop culture jokes to teach the words to the listener.

The words are displayed really well and they are in fact SAT words, not imitation words one might see in a 2nd grade crossword puzzle. Words like rhetoric and opulent make up some of the words in this CD. Students will find this method fun and catchy and will be remembering these words in no time.

“It seems like a really good idea as most students that go to study the SAT are turned off by those huge books,” said Ms. Jimenez, head counselor.

The CAP counselor Ms. Gonzales also thought the CD was a good idea saying, “It might be good for those students who don’t want to take an SAT class and would rather listen to the CD at their own pace.”

The CD was also played for a class of 11th grade English honors students here at Varela.

The overall response was that it was a good way of learning and practicing SAT vocabulary without having to go through the trouble of taking a class that might cost them a lot of money or reading a 500 page book.

It’s seems that this new method can and probably will be embraced by teens and teachers alike as a good alternative for the less devoted SAT prepsters.
