The year’s SADD club (Students Against Destructive Decisions) decided to try and make a point about how students or anyone in general should not drink and drive because of the many consequences that can occur.

On Wednesday, March 7, students from the club and members of the Miami-Dade County Police department’s ‘Don’t Let Alcohol Be Your Last Taste of Life’ program came together to put on an event called a mock crash. This mock crash was made to show students what can happen if they were underage and drinking while behind the wheel.

The event itself had been planned since the beginning of the school year but wasn’t taken into effect and confirmed until mid-February. Classes were invited down to the driver’s ed. range to watch the events unfold. The actors in the mock crash (students in SADD) were prepared for their scene and covered in fake blood and wounds. As all the classes slowly came out and spread out around the scene, no one knew what to expect. All they saw were two crashed vehicles, two "dead" people, one injured person, a drunk female and a vehicle with two parents.

As the scene unfolded, they were joined by Miami-Dade County police, fire and rescue with police cars, a fire truck and an ambulance.

As the show began students faces grew more and more shocked at the details that were being described by Officer Nancy as she narrated the event.

The story line was that of a group of friends coming back from the beach during spring break who decided to take a red light and hit a car in oncoming traffic. The driver, being drunk, had no idea as to what was going on and what had happened to her friends or even to the other car.

"When I came out and saw the scene I wasn’t sure if to believe that this could really be happening.

Even though I knew it was fake, just to think that one bad decision can make this happen to anyone is mind blowing," said junior Karim Constant.

Many events took place in the scene such as the picking up of the dead bodies, arresting the drunk driver and even having to cut the roof off the other vehicle. The whole show was a success and hit hard to many of its watchers.

"This experience has showed me that I will never drink and drive. Very scary knowing that just to have fun for one day can possibly hurt those who I love and those innocent," said junior Daniela Anzola who played the drunk driver in the mock crash.

Since this event only occurs in a limited number of schools, Varela was lucky to get the opportunity to sponsor it.

"As vice-president of the club it was an honor to have this opportunity to show Varela students the consequences of these types of bad decisions," said junior Denisse Canales.

All in all, the mock crash itself was a success and had a positive impact on its students. It seems that the students who witnessed the mock crash will think twice the next time they begin to ponder about drinking and driving.
