Meet Christopher Sanchez; an academically active student that claims the title of Varela’s 2009-2010 Valedictorian. Sanchez has always been fond of Science and giving back to his community. In the summer of his freshman year, Mr. Nicholas Oehm assisted Sanchez in participating in one of his programs at Florida International University.

During his time there, he had the opportunity to work with Dr. Colin Saunders, a research scientist, in identifying and measuring different saw grass seeds found in the Everglades. His research helped land and water managers decide the kinds of policies to use in order to save water. The following summer, Sanchez eagerly reached out to Oehm with plans for entering the science fair. To his surprise, he won second place in the category of plant sciences at the Intel International Science Fair.

“Christopher is a highly motivated student; in fact, I wish I was as motivated as he is when I was his age,” said Oehm. “I admire him for helping other students who are also involved in the science fair. I am extremely proud of his hard work and accomplishments throughout his education at Varela.”

Sanchez has also excelled in working with the Long Term Ecological Research network (LTER) at the National Science Foundation. The LTER studies different ecosystems and how those ecosystems change over time. The program director, Dr. Henry Gholz, quickly recognized Sanchez’s hard work. As a result, he has met scientists all across the network and has worked closely with 160 individuals to conserve the Everglades.

After graduating high school, he aspires to have a profession in the field of research. Before embarking on his professional journey, Sanchez intends on receiving hands-on experience at the University of Miami’s science research program. Out of all the courses he has taken at Varela, he likes AP Biology the best. He is the public relations officer in NHS and president of Physics club.

“To get good grades, keep your eyes focused ahead and remind yourself that things are going to get better; knowing that there is always a light at the end of the tunnel is the key to completing high school,” said Sanchez.

Aside from academics, he plays music and runs. Sanchez enjoys listening to rock, jazz, and classical music. He can be described as a very modest guy with a friendly personality. Friend, senior Vanessa Novoa, looks up to Sanchez and acknowledges his efforts.

“I am really happy for him; his dedication is inspiring and is really paying off,” said Novoa. “His accomplishments are reflections of all the sleepless nights spent studying.”

Sanchez is currently focused on his project for this year’s science fair.

“I started off not knowing what to think of scientific researching, but it turned out to be something that I am very passionate about,” he said.
