Happy 10^th Birthday Varela

Felix Varela Senior High School opened to students for the first time in the fall of 2000. Over the years, our school has grown. Class presidents have come and gone. Clubs have been created and expanded to the point where we have a National Honors Society with more than 50 members. Teachers that once occupied our classrooms are now seen in scattered areas across the district while others take their place, optimistic and eager to teach. It is now 2009, ten years later; look how far we’ve come.

            Our tenth year anniversary is more than just a commemoration of Varela’s beginning. Our tenth year anniversary signifies the history our school has left behind. Each person has left their own legacy at our school, an imprint that has helped our school progress even farther each year.

            Year ten will also be an opportunity to interact with past alumni. A Facebook page has been created for all current and past students, faculty, and staff. From past club sponsors to new security guards, everyone that has contributed to the growth of Varela is more than welcome to become a fan. The group already has 2,000 fans.

            “It’s a way to bring students, alumni and faculty together and it’s an easy way to keep in touch,” said Ms. Connie Navarro, school principal.

            This year we will feature stories and updates commemorating a decade of our school’s existence.

            Our school is no longer a ‘newbie.’ It is established. The class of 2010 is part of a special year as is the rest of the school. This year will be as significant as you make it. Let’s see how it goes.
