In the past few years the Catholic church has had a substantial drop in participants as more and more issues develop against both the founding ideals and clergy it is heavily associated with.

There have been new policies adapted by the Roman Catholic Church in regards to abusive priests, and there is an official study of 50 years of molestation claims under way.

Even with all this, there are several groups that say the church and bishops are not doing enough.

“There is no moral authority until they get this fixed, and it’s not fixed,” said Paul Baier, president of Survivors First, and organization which maintains a public database of accused priests.

However, Monsignor Francis Maniscalco, a spokesperson for the U.S. conference of Catholic Bishops, said that the bishops dedicate themselves to a wide range of pastoral concerns and that eliminating the possibility of further sexual abuse is at the top of their agenda.

Three hundred fifty-six of the nation’s 46,000 priests have resigned or been suspended over claims of molestation, and there have been several multimillion-dollar settlements with large groups of victims.

As a result, a system of church tribunals have been established to try accused priests.

Former FBI agent Kathleen McChesney leads the bishops’ Office of Child and Youth Protection and is now overseeing an audit of all 195 U.S. diocese. She will be prepared to release her findings soon.

The National Review Board, created by the bishops, will also be releasing its findings on a study of molestation cases that have occurred over the last 50 years.

Already there have been five convictions of priests who have molested children in the state of Florida; specifically, the Palm Beach, Orlando and St. Petersburg areas.

There are also two cases of child molestation pending a criminal investigation in this state.
