Teen drivers must always drive safe. One ticket or fender-bender can send a teen’s auto insurance rates sky high. According to insurance companies, the 16-to-24 year-old set are the highest risk drivers on the road. Since teens are at higher risk of getting into an accident, their parent’s insurance rate will be a lot higher.

But auto insurance for teen drivers gets cheaper as the car they drive gets safer and less expensive. A used car can decrease the cost of auto insurance for teens, especially if they drop collision and comprehensive coverage. Allan Misline from State Farm Insurance claims that the color of a teen’s car might increase rates a bit. Also tuning up (adding a spoiler, rims, turbo, etc.) will increase the insurance, not only because it will be dangerous on the streets, but also because it is more theft visible which makes it more of a risk for a teen’s vehicle to get stolen.

One way to cut costs is to take advantage of good student teen driver insurance rates. Teens could save up to 25% on their car insurance if they maintain a “B” average or above.

It is also recommended that teens take drivers education. Taking this course could be good for discounts up to 15%. Some insurers offer “safe driver programs.” Participants in these programs sign contracts stating that they won’t, for instance, drink and drive. For more information, teens should talk to their insurers. If teens complete this program, their insurance may cut an extra 5% off the rate. Unfortunately, not all insurance companies give this discount, which is why it’s important to contact and get quotes from several.

Ms. Misline says that State Farm Insurance will not give a discount on taking drivers ed. class. After getting a minimum of 3 years of being a safe driver with State Farm, drivers get a discount that increases every few years. After the first 3 years, drivers get an increase of a 5% discount. Six years will see a discount of 10%. Ten years 15%, and 15 years is a discount of 20%.

With Allstate Auto Insurance, safe drivers can save up to 20% on their rates. Safe driving means no tickets, and no accidents.

The rates parents pay for auto insurance will depend on the type of car they buy, their past car driving record, their marital status, and the place where they live, how often and where they drive their car, and even the color of their car. Adding a 16-year-old driver to an auto insurance policy can come with a hefty price tag.

Teens shouldn’t become the principal driver of a car, which pushes up the premium even more. Parents should keep teens insured on their policy and list the teen as an occasional driver if possible.

Coach Baton, one of out driver’s ed. teachers, says “In drivers ed., we teach basic defensive driving skills. Our emphasis is safety! Students can earn a restricted driving license waiver, an operator’s driver waiver, and an insurance deduction waiver.

We also offer the D.A.T.E. class for free in drivers ed. This class is usually 4 hours and about $40 if taken at a driving school. This class is mandatory before getting your license.

There is no great insurance for teens! It is very expensive and tickets greatly increase the amount paid. Drivers ed. may help reduce the cost.”
