The screaming cries of the insane fans that came out that night in support for their favorite contestant/club were enough to break the sound barrier. Or my eardrums. Posters displaying various slogans for their respective clubs flash throughout the auditorium. Seats were filled to the max, even having to open the back of the auditorium to accommodate the eager audience members.
"These are some very brave boys for doing this," said activities director, Ms. Felicia Christin as she introduced the male contestants who willingly decided to take their chance in taking home the coveted Mr. Varela crown.

Curtains open slowly, taunting the crowd to yell and stamp in delight and wonderment. One by one, the 17 contestants (Mr. FFA, Mr. 2010, Mr. 2012, Mr. Best Buddies, Mr. HOSA, Mr. NHS, Mr. NEHS, Mr. 2009, Mr. NSHS, Mr. Tri-M, Mr. Quill and Scroll, Mr. Fashion, Mr. NJROTC, Mr. Interact, Mr. 2011, Mr. Thespian, and Mr. Drama) filed out and collectively broke out in a choreographed dance with a music mix that included Footloose, Nsync, The Backstreet Boys, and The Pussycat Dolls.

Each contestant strutted their good stuff, impressing the crowd and judges with some hip-shaking, smile flashing, muscle flexing, and hair flipping swagger. Black umbrellas were used as props along with the dance routine as the Mr. Varela hopefuls sashayed around the stage with them. Surprisingly, all the Mr. Varelas got into the whole act and parody of the show, even so much as crawling and slithering on the stage floor. Girls were screaming left to right, and not one belly was spared with laughter and ache after that entertaining routine was
done.
The swimsuit portion of the show followed, as each Mr. Varela came out and showed their tropical board shorts and wife beater tanks. As each of them filed out, more oddities erupted from the contestants. Mr. Fashion club donned a robe over his swimsuit and ripped it off while flashing his legs, while Mr. NEHS tossed dramatic hair flips.
A screen descended from the projector to show a video of the contestants answer
ing personal questions such as where they could see themselves in ten years, who was their role model, and why they decided to enter in the Mr. Varela competition, as to which the majority replied "the dancing!"
The top ten males that made it into the next preliminaries were Mr.2010, Mr. HOSA, Mr. Tri-M, Mr. Quill and Scroll, Mr. Fashion, Mr. 2010, Mr. Drama, Mr. Thespian, and Mr. 2012.
Drama teacher, Mr. Rey Bode came on a screen, clad in sunglasses and sitting on a throne, gave an intorduction to a Mr.Varela "all about being sexy" video montage, where the contestant washed cars to the song "Don’t Cha" by The Pussycat Dolls, gyrating around the vehicle while abs and muscles were flashed, and water was being poured on each other by other contestants. Crowd members squealed with delight and hooted with joy at the sight of these
stunning images.
A talent portion of the show commenced with talents that varied to one man bands, skateboard tricks, reciting poetry, dancing, sign language along with a song, singing, DJ skills, and a multi-talent consisting of juggling, playing guitar, and the piano all at the same time. In a surprising twist, Mr. Bode had Ms. Christin come out in the middle of the stage sitting on a stool, while the Mr. Varelas passionately sang to her, serenading her with roses at her feet and making loving faces at her.
The top 5 Mr. Varelas that made it into the next round were Mr. Class of ’09, Mr. Tri- M, Mr. Quill and Scroll, Mr. Class of 2011, and Mr. Thespian.
Each one then had to pick a random question from a hat, and answer it. Some questions such as "What qualities do you look for in a friend?" to "Tell us a time when you wished you kept your mouth shut."
After the questions were answered, the moment of truth arrived. The award of Mr. Congeniality was given to Mr. NHS, Pablo Cordoba and the Mr. Varela runner-up was revealed to be Mr. Thespian, Adrian Rifat. Last but not least, the first annual Mr. Varela was none other than Mr. Quill and Scroll, Samuel Lopez.
