The annual Club Rush at Felix Varela Senior High this past September 3, was filled with tables of jam-packed students and flyers of the various activities provided for us, as well as bright new faces that motivated the start of a bright new year.

Unfortunately 10% of last year’s clubs, such as the Gay Straight Alliance and Japanese, have been “dropped” due to budget cuts. Still, more than 45 clubs exist, covering just about every activity a kid could want, from Physics to Fashion and Spanish to Sports Medicine and from service clubs to honor societies.

Each year a winner is chosen for the most exuberating, fun and creative club that encourages students to participate. The winner gets a page in the yearbook paid for by the Activities Department.

This year many clubs showed this attribute, but the most engaging this year was chosen to be Best Buddies, with Fashion club, as the runner up.

School clubs can be fun and meaningful depending on the purpose; however, plenty of students didn't quite find Club Rush as important, seeing that not all students find after school activities as interesting.

“I rarely have any time to sleep, let alone spend more time in school than needed plus I have tons of homework every day and soon to have a job. So I don't really think clubs are beneficial to me, but really just pointless and time consuming," said senior Lazaro Cardoso.

Students do not usually spend much time in school after the 2:30 bell; some even ask, “Why should we spend more time here, when we spend around 7 hours dreading the entire day?”

Participating in after school activities such as clubs only interests a few, and most students dismiss after school activities as out of the question.

However, students are not conscious of the fact that joining extra-curricular activities might actually help our college future in many ways.

These activities in high school will be fundamentally serviceable since universities not only look over grade point averages and test scores, but also leadership capabilities and participation in school activities.

Participating in school clubs can be extremely beneficial, for they offer ways to meet many people who share the same interests and afford students the chance to show off their leadership and team building skills.
