Even with a dominant performance, the girl’s tennis team finished their season heading into the regional tournament where they lost to Coral Reef. Senior captain Daniela Mangas showed her unique skills as she was the Lady Viper to win a match.

“I was extremely excited to win my matches but wished that we could have had some more power to advance, but I’m still happy to get as far as we did,” said Mangas.

“I am extraordinarily proud of this girls team, the best in Varela history,” said Coach Timothy Vanscoy.

Unfortunately for the boys team, they couldn’t pass the district level of playing as they lost in the first round ultimately ending their season. Captain Steven Varela predicted the future as he said in the beginning of the season that “experience will come into play because we are in one of the toughest districts in the county.”

He has challenged his players to do their best on and off the court to help their ailing team.

“I know how difficult it is to play in our district…we just had to step up this year and unfortunately we didn’t accomplish our goals,” he said.

Mangas, however, enjoys the feeling of officially representing her team in the regional tournament.

“It is a privilege to be the captain for this well awarded team, I am really proud of all we accomplished this year,” she said.

The Lady Vipers finished runner up to Lourdes in the district. According to Mangas, it was an excruciating season with the difficult schedule.

“Our district is one of the toughest districts for tennis,” said Mangas.

They had to match up against Lourdes (district winner), and Coral reef (beat Lourdes in the 2nd round of regionals and is currently in the FHSAA finals). Also, the Lady Vipers were matched up against Coral Reef in the regional tournament bracket. They battled it out until the very end, finally losing 1-6.
