The fashion world is infamously known for its beautiful, intricate clothes, breath-taking slender models, and those intriguing, innovative designers. Varela takes part of that infamous world, with the Fashion Club’s 2nd annual Fashion Show on Monday, May 19. The fashion show is sponsored by the Fashion Club, who are showcasing their own passion for fashion right here in our school.

“It’s important for kids to have a venue to express themselves,” said Ms. Sheila Dymond, sponsor for the Fashion Club.

This show is completely comprised of the student body, with student designers and models. Aspiring designers showed their sketches to Ms. Dymond for approval of “inappropriate clothes that made certain things hang or pop out,” she said, and anyone that wanted to model in the show filled out an application and strutted their walk (in skyscraper heels) in front of the designers who then had their choice to pick.

“I’m exited to model for the show, I’m not nervous, but this whole process is overwhelming,” said senior Jessika Lee who modeled for sophomore designer Bianca Matheson and senior designer Catherine Rodriguez.

Designers that debuted in the show were Paul Japaz (sophomore), Matheson, Carolina Ramirez (junior), Rodrigez, and Crystal Fernandez (sophomore). It was all work and no play for these designers, from late calls after school fittings, to arranging fashion show participators’ schedules, to meeting hard pressed deadlines. Inspiration became a major factor for the designers, ranging from established fashion houses like Chanel, and the word on all the designers’ tongues, vintage.

“I make my own vintage!” said Japaz.

At the fashion show, pumping music filled the air and an excited crowd filled the seats while the show was set to begin.

The first designer to appear was Matheson whose collection had a sweet, baby doll innocence vibe.

Then came Ramirez’s collection which was named “Caroville.” Her clothes were reminiscent of famous designer Gwen Stefani.

The next designer showed was Fernandez whose clothes can only be described as uptown elegance, filled with intricate gowns and a sophisticated little black dress with hot pink zippers.

The next designer was Rodrigez whose pieces were dark and grungy, with plaid miniskirts,’ black corseted tops, and lots of leopard prints. Music like Metallica and Marilyn Manson was a good addition to accompany the clothes.

The show was closed by Fashion Club president Japaz, with a European rocker chic feel that was very hip and trendy.

Compared to last year, the show was completely different, from its location to dressing room space. This year it was held in the cafeteria (last year it was held in the auditorium), with portable lighting kits, a PA system, and a raised catwalk platform, all thanks to the drama department.

“The lights and platform help set the mood during the show, and in turn will help the clothes look better,” said Mr. Rey Bode, head of the drama department.

“We adore the drama department, they are our backbone and we couldn’t do this without them,” raved members of the Fashion Club.
