Andre Agassi’s, career came to an end on September 3, 2006. He finished his career by losing to Benjamin Becker 7-5, 6-7(4), 6-4, 7-5 in the third round of the US Open.

Agassi turned professional in 1986 at the age of 16 and won his first title in 1987 at Itaparica. As a young up-and-coming player, Agassi embraced a rebel image. His rocker length hair, earring, and exotic clothes went against tennis’ strict regulations. His headline soon became “Image is Everything.”

After winning major titles in 1992 through 1996, Agassi faced a bad year in 1997, where he didn’t win major titles and was being affected by the hype of his profile. In 1998, he began an extreme workout process in order to get in top shape and quickly redefined himself as one of the top players again. Agassi became a worldly known idol and was quickly returning to the top by blowing past the top players in the world at the time, such as Marat Safin, in the Tennis Masters Cup.

In 2003, Agassi won the eighth Grand Slam title of his career at the Australian Open, where he beat Ranier Schuttler. Agassi’s 2005 season was cut short by Roger Federer, who has already once defeated Agassi in the final of the Tennis Masters Cup in 2003. By finishing 2005 ranked number seven, his 16th time ranking in the year-end top ten, he tied the record of Jimmy Connors for the most times ranking in the top ten in the world.

Varela’s tennis coach, Mr. Timothy Vanscoy, compared Agassi to Jimmy Connors with his toughness that he gave out in every game.

Due to many injuries such as back pain, Agassi’s career was coming to an end. With his final game in the US Open on September 3 this year, Agassi thanked the fans for their support and inspiration throughout the years.

“You have willed me to succeed, sometime even in my lowest moments. And I have found generosity. You have given me your shoulders to stand on to reach for my dreams,” Agassi said in a recent news interview.

Coach Vanscoy said that “he went out classy and inspirational.”

Agassi’s career in tennis has had its ups and downs coming from the world’s number one tennis player to ranking 141 in the world and back to winning the US Open in 1999.

He has won many major titles including the US Open, eight Grand Slam titles, The Masters, The Australian Open, The French Open, and even an Olympic gold medal. With all of his achievements, he can clearly be honored as one of the best players in tennis history.

Coach Vanscoy said that Andre Agassi is one of the top Americans in history. On asking him what Agassi meant to tennis, he said that Agassi “definitely gave Americans a champion with a lot of heart.”
