Classic tips off tomorrow

Gem City Bone and Joint, the University of Wyoming, and LHS will host the inaugural Gem City Cowboy Classic basketball tournament beginning tomorrow through Wednesday.

Teams are coming from five different states to compete in the boys’ tournament with three states represented in the girls’ bracket. All teams will play one game each day. All games will be played at UW’s Arena Auditorium (AA) or Multi-Purpose Gym (MPG). Day passes, available at the door, will be $7 for adults and $3 for high school students.

According to LHS activities director and tournament director Scott Handley, besides eight games each day, fans will be treated to a special event starting tomorrow at noon in the AA. The boys’ and girls’ teams will have two players participating in both slam-dunk and three-point shooting contests. Preceding the contest will be an orientation in which players and coaches from all 16 teams will be introduced.

The boys’ teams include Bonita Vista (California), Greeley West and Douglas County (Colorado), Gering (Nebraska), Provo (Utah), Wright, Cheyenne Central and the Plainsmen (Wyoming).

The Plainsmen tip off against Provo tomorrow at 8:45 p.m. in the AA.

There are also eight teams in the girl’s bracket, including Horizon, Boulder Fairview and Grand Junction (Colorado), American Fork (Utah), Wright, Powell, Central and Lady Plainsmen (Wyoming). The Lady Plainsmen will play tomorrow at 7 p.m. against Fairview in the MPG.

Tuesday and Wednesday’s schedule depends on the outcome of each day’s games.

‘Change’ raises $1,100

More than $1,100 was collected in Multicultural’s “Make a Change” drive.

Students from four SEB classes will receive well-earned parties for collecting the most money.

Cory Scimeca’s SEB led the contest with $206 and won an Ethnic Food Parties. Frank Schreckengost’s class received second place with $182 and a pizza party. Liz Becker’s SEB collected $170, enough for third and a Willie Wonka party. Dennis Hogsett’s SEB was fourth and won a milk and cookies party.

Parties will be on Tuesday during SEB. Multicultural Group, who ran the fundraiser, received more money than last December and considered it a success, according to Multicultural member Paige Courtney.

Food drive nets 1,300 pounds

More than 1,300 pounds of food was collected in Student Council sponsored food drive in Student Enrichment Block.

Many seventh block classes participated with party prizes given to the top four. First place winner was Tim Daniels’ SEB with 278 pounds, second was Laura Niswender (181) third place Jennifer Bennett (103), and fourth Joel Hayano (97).

Students and staff brought in non-perishable food to their seventh block SEB classes. All food and “Make a Change” money collected went to the Holiday Helpers committee that assisted LHS students and their families who were in need this holiday season. Activities secretary Janie Moore once again provided special assistance to the food drive.

Holiday shopping at LHS

Christmas CDs, yearbooks and Plainsman attire are all available at LHS for holiday gift giving.

The following three stories are about these items.

Christmas CDs for sale

“The Gift Carol” is the Christmas CD currently being sold by the LHS choir students.

Eight groups are featured on the CD. They include Concert Choir, Girls Select, Plainsmen Singers, Mixed Chorus (LHS), Collegiate Chorale and Singing Statesman (UW), the LJHS Show Choir and Laramie Children’s Choir.

Vocalists first started recording for this CD in the middle of November with the assistance of Dave Rickard. The high school choirs recorded many different takes of their songs on Nov. 15 and picked the best ones to include on the CD that contains 12 tracks. Choir director Sandy Steele designed the CD and cover and produced the CDs.

Plainsmen Singers, Concert Choir, or Girls Select members are selling the CDs for $10. They are also available from Sandy Steele at LHS (721-4420).

This holiday CD is another fundraiser to help the vocalists travel to Hawaii for the Heritage Music Festival next April.
