George W. Bush and Dick Cheney were elected president and vice president in the mock election at LHS on Oct. 25-26
The juniors and seniors in Newspaper and U.S. History classes were asked to vote during class. Unfortunately not many seniors voted since most U.S. History classes are made up of juniors only. Students were able to vote for U.S. President, U.S. Representative, State Senator, State Representative, County Commissioner, City Council and School Board Trustees. A separate ballot, like on Election Day, was given for the students to vote for the smoking ordinance (No. 1650) that will appear at this year’s election. Unlike the official ballots, all the candidates who are running for State Representative, City Council and School Board appeared on the mock election ballots.
Approximately 182 students of 730 enrolled (25%) voted in LHS’ mock election.
Mr. Schabron, an LHS history teacher, shares his feelings on the mock elections. “I think the mock election is a great idea. It helps the students become familiar with the process.”
CP appreciated the efforts of the social studies teachers who provided time for their students to vote. Those teachers include Liz Becker, Greg Schabron, Cory Scimeca and Keith Smueles along with substitute teacher Carrie Martin.
Also a thanks to Mrs. Sue Morris-Jones, a city clerk, for providing us with sample ballots of the No. 1650 smoking ordinance.
The votes were counted by the second hour Newspaper staff. Results of the seven categories follow.

Bush elected President
Republicans George W. Bush and Dick Cheney were elected in the mock presidential election with 56% of the overall vote.
The incumbents gained 100 of the 177 votes cast, while Democratic Senator John Kerry and running mate John Edwards came in second with sixty votes. This gave them 34% of the overall votes.
Others receiving votes include Independent candidate Ralph Nader with fourteen votes, Libertarian candidate Michael Badnarik with two votes, and Independent candidate Michael A. Peroutka with one vote.
Receiving single write in ballots were Bridger Baily, Jared Wade, Jesse Zhang, Wang Chung and G-Unit.
--Mandy Smith
Cubin elected U.S. Representative
Republican incumbent Barbara Cubin has won the election for United States Representative. She received 106 out of 168 votes, winning the election with 63% of the votes. The runner up, Democrat Ted Ladd received 49 votes, while Lewis Stock, the Libertarian, received nine.
For the write in votes Mickey Mouse reeled in two, while Jared Wade received one vote along with Wang Chung.
--Tony Christensen
Nicholas elected State Senator
Republican Phil Nicholas received the most votes in the mock election for State Senator, winning by a 50% margin out of the 163 votes.
The results of this election may have been swayed by the name recognition of Mr. Nicholas, because his son goes to school here at LHS.
Tim Chestnut came in second place out of the two candidates with 40% of the votes.
Write-ins, making up .03% of the votes included Donald Duck, Jerry Garcia, Barney, Jared Wade, Wang Chung, and Tyler Elmom.
--Charles Buxton
Brown elected State Representative
Republican Kermit C. Brown won the mock election for Wyoming State Representative with 30% of the 150 votes.
Under Kermit C. Brown (45) was Republican incumbent James J. Slater (22), Republican Kevin A. White (19), Democratic incumbent Jane Warren (14), Democrat Joseph R. Kiovsky (12), Democrat Jan Alvaney (11), Democrat Vaughn Neubauer (11), Republican Kurt S. Bucholz (6).

--Tenae Mascarenas
Kennedy top vote receiver
The Incumbent Jerry M. Kennedy (Republican) won the election with 88 of the votes (58 %). Name recognition could be a huge factor in his victory; Kennedy is great uncle to current LHS students Nick and Holly Kennedy.
Approximately one hundred fifty-three students at LHS voted in the mock election for county commissioner.
Jim Thompson (Democratic) came in second with fifty-three votes (35%). Three votes were given to the no candidate category (2%), while the remaining eight were given to the “write ins” option. The “write in” representative votes are as follows: Sterling Leinen with three, while Terrh G, Jerry Garcia, Jared Wade, Wang Chung, and Liz Becker with one vote each.
--Damian Kirkwood
Shumway wins mock election
Joe Shumway (receiving 44 of the 149 votes) was elected to city council at large, a four-year term, during the LHS mock election. Shumway won with 30% of the total votes. Also, he has previously served on the city council.

Shea (8), Jeanette Reisenburg (3), Joe Hageman (3), Seth Adrian Carson (3), and all receiving one vote were Dylan Pryzgocki, Jerry Garcia, JJ Scott, and Jared Wade.

--Micah Shuster
Ibarra, Jenkins and Coughlin elected

Others receiving votes were Philip Brown (25), John Freeman (25), Joyce “Joy” Surdam (22), Michelle Jones (17), Mary Burman (15), Wayne Thornburg (11), Charles Ksir (6), and Clarence Unruh (5).
Two hundred and eighty-two students voted in the school board election. Fifty-three percent of these votes were put forth towards the top three candidates.
Those holding office for school board right now are Burman, Coughlin, Jenkins and Ksir. Two of these board members, Coughlin and Jenkins, were the top three in the mock election once again.
Other individuals who received write in positions include: Jerry Garcia, Travis Hammer, Johny Lopez, Steven Riggs, Jared Wade and Trevor Whisit.
