George W. Bush and Dick Cheney were elected president and vice president in the mock election at LHS on Oct. 25-26

The juniors and seniors in Newspaper and U.S. History classes were asked to vote during class. Unfortunately not many seniors voted since most U.S. History classes are made up of juniors only. Students were able to vote for U.S. President, U.S. Representative, State Senator, State Representative, County Commissioner, City Council and School Board Trustees. A separate ballot, like on Election Day, was given for the students to vote for the smoking ordinance (No. 1650) that will appear at this year’s election. Unlike the official ballots, all the candidates who are running for State Representative, City Council and School Board appeared on the mock election ballots.

Approximately 182 students of 730 enrolled (25%) voted in LHS’ mock election.

Mr. Schabron, an LHS history teacher, shares his feelings on the mock elections. “I think the mock election is a great idea. It helps the students become familiar with the process.”

CP appreciated the efforts of the social studies teachers who provided time for their students to vote. Those teachers include Liz Becker, Greg Schabron, Cory Scimeca and Keith Smueles along with substitute teacher Carrie Martin.

Also a thanks to Mrs. Sue Morris-Jones, a city clerk, for providing us with sample ballots of the No. 1650 smoking ordinance.

The votes were counted by the second hour Newspaper staff. Results of the seven categories follow.
