ABSTRACT

The Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS), funded by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, was established in 1999 to provide outstanding, low income African American, American Indian/Alaska Natives*, Asian Pacific Islander American**, and Hispanic American students with an opportunity to complete an undergraduate college education in any discipline they choose. Continuing Gates Scholars may request funding for a graduate degree program in one of the following discipline areas: computer science, education, engineering, library science, mathematics, public health or science. The goal of GMS is to promote academic excellence by providing thousands of outstanding students, who have significant financial need, the opportunity to reach their full potential.

The Gates Millennium Scholars scholarship was funded by a historic grant of more than 1 billion dollars to the United Negro College Fund, still the largest single gift to any scholarship organization. One of the most unique aspects of the GMS program is the partnership and collective efforts of the four partner organizations providing services to the Gates Scholars. GMS program staff members at the American Indian Graduate Center Scholars, the Asian Pacific Islander Scholarship Fund, the Hispanic Scholarship Fund, and the United Negro College Fund served students from all fifty states, the District of Columbia American Samoa, Federated States of Micronesia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. It has truly been a national effort.

ELIGIBILITY

Nominees who meet all of the eligibility requirements and who are selected as GMS candidates must include a federal Pell Grant as part of their financial aid package for the 2008-2009 academic year. To determine their Pell Grant eligibility, Nominees must submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to the U.S. Department of Education, Federal Student Aid Programs. Nominees are urged to file a 2008-2009 FAFSA at the earliest opportunity and no later than February 1, 2008. Federal Pell Grants typically are awarded to families that demonstrate significant financial need. Eligibility for a Federal Pell Grant is a function of many factors, including dependency status, family income, family size, and the number of students in the family. To determine your eligibility, you and/or your parent(s)/guardian(s) should meet with your high school counselor or the financial aid officer at the college or university you plan to attend. For more information visit www.fafsa.ed.gov

Note: Please do not submit your FAFSA with your GMS application. If you are selected as a finalist, GMS will request your FAFSA information at that time.

The application process for GMS awards is highly competitive, and we urge students to submit their nomination packets as early as possible.

--Are African American, American Indian/Alaska Native*, Asian Pacific Islander American**,

University of Wyoming Honors Program

DUE DATE

2/1/2008

ABSTRACT

The Honors Scholars Awards vary in amounts for four years. These awards will be in addition to whatever financial aid comes through the Hathaway. Awards vary from $1,000 to $4,000. They are looking for students of outstanding promise and ambition, and they recognize that scores and grades are not always the best indicator of those qualities; they want to hear what students have to say and to learn about what they have done. High scores on national tests and strong grades are also important, but the selection committee pays a good deal of attention to letters of recommendation, the list of a student's activities and achievements, and the student essay.

TYPE

Scholarship

ELIGIBILITY

Unlike most scholarships at UE, Honors Scholar's Awards require a separate application.

The criteria for admission to the program are

1) 3.7 high school GPS

2) 28 composite ACT

3) a combined total of 1240 on the verbal and quantitative sections of the SAT

Students need to meet only one of these three criteria. A student who does not meet any of the criteria and who wants to be admitted may write to us and discuss their reasons for wanting to join. Many students are admitted and some win scholarships.

AMOUNTS

HOW TO APPLY

To apply, contact Mr. Hulit in the LHS Counseling office.

Students who wish to be considered for a stipend should provide a completed Honors Program application and the following additional materials.

To give you a chance to describe your interests and commitments, please submit a 250-word statement about one of the following topics. We encourage you to discuss a draft of your statement with family members, friends, and teachers.

--Discuss a problem or question that you expect to continue studying during your college years.

--Describe a class that changed your understanding of the world around you.

--Discuss a change you have made or would like to make in your local community.

If you had the opportunity to travel anywhere to study a specific thing, process, or event, where would you go and what would you investigate?

Please include a list of your most important academic achievements and awards, extra-curricular activities, work experiences, and any special interests, hobbies, achievements, and commitments.

We would like to hear from two high school or college faculty who know you, your work, and your abilities. Please fill out the top part of the faculty recommendation form before passing it on to your instructors.

UW Summer High School Institute

DUE DATE

2/8/2008

ABSTRACT

The MISSION of the Summer High School Institute is to provide a place where some of the state's most intellectually talented sophomores could gather before their junior and senior years, living and studying in an environment with no pressure for grades, and sharing ideas and friendship with other gifted students.

The PRIMARY PURPOSE of the program is to draw talented high school sophomore students to the university for an intensive examination of unanswered questions and unresolved challenges. Among the areas that will be probed are: world hunger, plants and people, knights and cowboys, drama, ethics and society, communicating with computers, understanding cultural development, pharmacy, and the links between life and the arts.

The GOAL is not to require students to learn another body of knowledge and pass yet another test. It is, rather to challenge imaginations, focus diverse disciplines on specific issues or problems, and integrate various individual talents into a larger perspective. In the process we hope to help selected high school students achieve their academic and personal potential by cultivating their leadership capabilities; to expanding their horizons, developing their adaptability, creativity, and critical thinking abilities, and to heighten their sensitivity to future possibilities for themselves, Wyoming society; and to stimulate and reward excellence in Wyoming schools.

TYPE

Scholarship

Eligibility Criteria:

Students are eligible to be considered for a GMS scholarship if they:

NAME

TYPE

Educational Opportunity
