The 2012 DHS boys tennis team is fighting fierce this year with only an average height of about five feet five inches. This team may be short and very young, but they play hard and are ready to defeat some tough teams.
There are only three high schoolers on the team this season. They are Matt Calvert, Sam Nelson, and Michael McChesney. The rest of the team is made up of middle school students. This has made winning a challenge for coach Mojesky and the team this season. He expects to have a strong team in the future years due to one thing: a “building year.”
The team has had three team victories and suffered four losses. Throughout the season a seventh grader and three eighth graders have been stepping up and facing upperclassmen from other schools. A rookie, freshman Matt Calvert said, “It (being young) makes them feel like it may be easier for them to beat me.”
“Right now we don’t have depth of upperclassmen like some of the other teams and we are often playing older opponents,” said eighth grader Josh Joiner.
When asked about playing upper-class opponents, Joiner answered, “That should help us in the next several years as our young players continue to improve and be the best they can be.”
“I think we might stand a good chance of making top three at regionals,” Calvert said.
“We may be small and young but we are fierce,” coach Mojesky exclaims during practice as he continues to motivate his team.
