A GUST OF PEACE:

During all lunches Friday, September 21, sophomore Jasa S., and senior Tiffany A., stood outside the cafeteria asking students to create their own pinwheels for peace.

Pinwheels for Peace made its way to West Rowan High School last year and continued as a young tradition in the fall of 2007.

This year students came on their own and used markers and colored pencils to decorate the pinwheels.

Teachers Cindy Morgan and Stacey Reed’s art classes also helped in the peace making effort. After they had collected enough pinwheels, they put the finished product outside.

The Art and Diversity club, also known as the Sock Monkeys, sponsored Pinwheels for Peace for the first time last year at West Rowan. It is a national holiday and various other high schools and countries participate.

Last year, four hundred pinwheels were created at West Rowan. This year only about one hundred and ten pinwheels were made. It may not as be many as last year, but hopefully the message got across that more peace in the world is needed. “The violence in the world and between people has become common, and that’s why we celebrate Pinwheels for Peace,” says Stephens.
