Junior Logan Winfield ran a 17:40 5K race on Sept. 10 for the cross-country team, placing ninth of 95 racers and leading the pack for a large part of his first race ever.

“I guess it was just beginner’s luck,” said Winfield, who admitted that he felt dizzy at the end.

Winfield averaged a 5:42 pace in the 5K race, astounding coach Nick Domich.

“He may be the fastest runner we’ve ever had,” Domich said.

The team has competed in only four races so far and has had low attendance for all of them. Three of nine racers have not shown up to any races, and only two have attended all four.

Practices have been held every week day since Aug. 8, consisting mainly of a jog along the American River.

Twice a week, the runners also do weight training at the beginning of practice for about 15-20 minutes.

However, only sophomore Darby Bosco and freshman Micaela Bennett-Smith attend practices, as most players attend soccer practice instead, and junior Jacob Frankel is currently injured.

The team’s next meet is another 5K at Stanford University on Saturday, Sept. 24.
