The boys’ varsity soccer team overwhelmed Paradise Adventist, 5-1, on Sept. 22.

Senior Nick Neal scored a 60-yard goal, while junior Morgan Bennett-Smith scored on a penalty kick, bringing his season total to 14. Junior Logan Winfield and senior Wei Dai also scored.

At home, the team thrashed the Freedom Christian Eagles, 8-0, on Sept. 20.

Prior to the Freedom match, coach Matt Vargo said the team was struggling with crosses, ball possession and communication.

“There’s definitely room for improvement,” he said.

But it didn’t look like it at the game. Many goals were scored off crosses, and the team began to dominate possession 15 minutes into the first half.

And the team held its ground in the second half even without most of its starters.

Freshman Erik Morfin-Ruiz and sophomores Caleb Davis and Charlie Johnson scored their first goals of the season, adding three goals to the first half’s five.

“It was great that other players could try new positions and get in the game,” senior Trevor Sutley said.

However, Vargo believes that team communication still needs improvement.

“We’re talking more, but we still need to listen,” he said.

While Vargo said the team did well, some players were disappointed with the passing and distribution on the field.

“We didn’t play well collectively,” sophomore Eric Hilton said.

According to Sutley, the varsity should have played better because Freedom is a smaller team (compared to the Cavs’ roster of 26) and is also coed.

The team has competed in nine matches so far, none of which have been against league schools.

The boys’ overall record is 4-3-2, although only the results from games against league teams will count towards sections.

The Cavs play their first league game today against Buckingham at Elm Elementary in Vacaville at 4 p.m.
