The ski and snowboard team has broken the ice on the 2010 season.

The team competes in two types of races, slalom and giant slalom, which are events in the Winter Olympics.

The Cavs ran their first two races at Boreal (one slalom and one giant slalom) on Jan. 29 and their third race at Alpine Meadows on Feb. 5.

Leading the way for the Cavs is senior Case Demmon.

Demmon placed 3rd in the two slalom races. He also scored points in the giant slalom race, in which he finished 11th, giving him 132 points for the season.

Points which determine race results are given to the three highest finishing competitors from each school, and each school is allowed to field up to eight entrants per division.

Sophomore Zach Lemos and freshman Donald Hutchinson have also been tearing up the slopes for the Cavs.

Lemos has placed 8th, 18th, and 7th in the three events, earning a total of 120 points.

Hutchinson has scored 122 points by placing 12th, 11th, and 8th in the three rounds.

Freshmen Brandon Pefferle, Brandon Mysicka, Anthony Valdez and Yanni Dahmani have raced in the men’s snowboarding category, earning 303 points.

Junior Paige FitzGibbon and sophomore Hayley Graves have represented the Cavs in the women’s skiing section, scoring a total of 75 points.

The Cavs have entered 11 different competitors in the men’s skiing competition, eight on varsity and three on junior varsity.

“Thanks to open division, I can pull up JV’s to varsity and send down varsity guys at any time to improve the team’s results,” coach Jason Kreps said.

Kreps thinks that the incentive of being moved up to varsity could encourage some of the skiers on the JV squad to improve their times.

“(Freshman) Jacob Frankel has really improved his times, and I can’t wait to pull him up,” Kreps said.

The squad traveled to Squaw Valley on Friday, but results were not available at press time.

The Cavs returned to Squaw on Feb. 15 for the final regular season race before state championships at Mount Shasta.

Kreps is very pleased with how the team is racing right now.

“We have three or four guys who are consistently in the top 10 (out of 25), which is great. As long as you are in the top 10, you know you’re doing something right,” Kreps said.
