Junior Jiwon (Jasmine) Oh recently founded the Korean Club to introduce students to Korean culture, language, and food.

The club meets every other Friday.

Oh,who emigrated from Korea to America in 2006, began the club because she thought Korean culture was underrepresented. “When people ask me my ethnicity, they ask me if I am Chinese and I say no and they are like, ‘Then you must be Japanese,’” Oh said.

During the first meeting, the club sampled kimbob, Korean sushi, and bulgogi, traditional Korean beef.

“The meat [Oh] had made tasted like Chinese stir fry,” said sophomore Lyria Beck, a member of the club.

The club also watched a PowerPoint on Korean clothing. They tried the hanbok on at the next meeting.

The hanbok is a traditional garment, consisting of two pieces, the jugori and chima. It used to be worn daily in Korea; now it is usually worn at holidays and weddings.

Senior Alecia Tung, a club member, commended Oh’s organization.

“She gave us a syllabus and everything,” said Tung.

The syllabus included the dates of the meetings and the activities that corresponded with those dates.

The club currently has 20 members, three of whom are Korean: senior Soya Sung, junior KJ Park, and Oh.

Oh plans to teach the members about Korean culture. They will also learn Korean phrases such as “I love you,” “thank you,” and how to say “mom” and “dad.”

In addition to Korean phrases, the club will learn the lyrics to some Korean music they have listened to. Some of theartists are 2 p.m., Browneyed Girls, and Girl’s Generation.

During the next meetings, Oh will give a presentation on Korean high schools and how they are different from American high schools.

Club members will get the chance to be e-mail pen pals with Oh’s Korean friends.

Oh’s goal is for the club to go to San Francisco to visit the Asian Art Museum, which has an exhibit dedicated to Asian art later this school year.
