Freshman Nikita Singh, daughter of maintenance foreman Sailendra Singh, has been part of an Indian dance group since June.

Members of the group, which includes three other girls, take turns giving up their houses for practices to get ready for performances. Singh has danced with her group at her cousin’s wedding and her friend’s sweet 16.

“Some people join in [the dancing] or throw money at us. One time we made almost $60,” Singh said.

The group, however, performs for free.

Singh, along with the other girls, choreographs the Indian and Punjabi dances. She learned to dance when she was little from watching her cousin.

The girls create the dance moves by listening to the Hindi words of the songs. Singh lived with her family in Fiji until she was four, and is semi-fluent in the language.

The group members wear “saris,” an Indian outfit, which Singh says is difficult to dance in because she is not used to wearing them.

Singh’s favorite part of participating in the dance group is spending time with her friends.
