The girls’ soccer team (10-6, 6-5 SMAL) takes to the field at Jim Elliot Christian (4-14, 1-10) today.

The team has a strong starting lineup (pictured at right) but has been hurt by several players missing key games. However, playoffs still remain a possibility.

“We’ve been working together as a team, and we rely on each other a lot,” junior Brigit Cvetich (21) said. “When one person can’t make it, it throws things off.”

The Cavs curently are fourth in the league standings, and must climb to second to earn their first Div. VI playoff spot in two years.

A key feature of the improved team is its defense. Junior Molly Tash has taken over the starting job at Goalie, and freshman Hayley Graves also has seen time defending the net.

Juniors Brianna Makishima (6) and Cvetich, sophomore Lauren Taylor (24) and freshman Lyria Beck (1) have helped out Tash with solid defense.

In 13 league games, opposing teams have scored only 24 goals, and there have been five shutouts.

Forwards have been the team’s strength this season, as they have posted some high goal totals.

Senior Keele Shaw-Connelly (5) has scored 13 goals on 79 shots, and sophomore Francesca Bell (16) has 9 on 43 shots.

Combined, the two account for 22 of the 38 goals thus far this season.

Powerful offense has produced some blowouts, including a 9-0 win early in the season against Global Youth Charter.

However, in the Cavs’ road game at Bradshaw April 22, the Cavs suffered two setbacks, falling 8-1 to the league leaders and losing Shaw-Connelly to a broken leg. She will miss the rest of the season, which could hurt the team’s ability to score and compete for a playoff spot.

The midfield has been hampered by injuries this season.

Senior Analise Rivero (14) missed four games after having nose surgery, though she came back last week.

However, a multitude of younger players including freshman Blair Wigney (3), and veterans junior Pressia Lao (10) and senior Kayla Winters (4) have stepped up to create a largely successful midfield.
