BASEBALL (1-1)

After a 4-13 2008 season, the Cavaliers head into 2009 looking to rebound.

The Cavs started off the league season with an 11-0, 5-inning rout of Sierra Christian.

Senior Miles Bennett-Smith pitched a complete-game shutout, and senior Andy Furillo went 3 for 4 with a triple and 5 RBIs.

The team finished last season on a high note with two back-to-back no-hitters from Furillo and Bennett-Smith.

Senior Tyler Trussell, who threw three shutout innings in a nonleague game against Encina, will round out the pitching staff.

The Cavs play at Faith Christian today in an important game, and await 11-time defending league champion Valley Christian.

SOFTBALL (0-3)

On Feb. 27, the first Country Day softball team in nearly 20 years took the field for the first time in the Burbank Tournament, against the host Burbank Titans.

The Cavs were competitive, falling to the Div. II Titans 14-8.

The Cavs struggled to produce later in the tournament, being blown out 28-0 by West Campus and forfeiting to Valley High due to a lack of players.

The team will rely on senior catcher Rachel Nakano and freshman pitcher Madison Galati, who both have played competitively.

The Cavs open their 2009 league run at Faith Christian today. As three of the four league teams make playoffs, two wins could put the Cavs in the postseason.

SOCCER (5-1)

The girls began the season with three lopsided victories over non-league rivals.

The biggest win so far is a 2-1 win against defending league champion Bradshaw Christian, March 12.

The team, 2-1 in league play so far, also has beaten Faith Christian, 2-0, but fell 3-0 to Buckingham.

Leading scorers Keele Shaw-Connelly, Analise Rivero, and Francesca Bell hope to continue their dominance, and the team relies on freshman Hayley Graves as goalkeeper. Shaw-Connelly leads the team with 10 goals in 54 attempts.

After already matching last year’s win total, the Cavs hope to make the playoffs.

The team plays today at Trinity Prep.

GOLF (3-1)

The golf team opened the season with an astounding 72-stroke win over Bradshaw Christian, the team’s first league match. The Cavs hope to carry this victory’s momentum into future matches.

The team also beat Buckingham and Freedom.

Last year, they lost only twice—both to league rival Faith Christian. Unfortunately, it was these two losses that prevented the Cavs from taking the  league title.

This year’s team is coached by Matt Vargo and new assistant coach Haitham Batarseh. Seniors Emile Bourgeois and Nick Foote hope to lead the team to a strong finish.

The Cavs played rival Faith yesterday, and their next match is against Lutheran on Thursday.

TENNIS (0-3)

The Cavs look to make the most of another difficult season.

They faced Dixon High  School on March 12 and fell 7-2.

The Cavs will be playing in the Div. III Capital Valley Conference again, and will be overmatched against much larger schools, such as Dixon and Rio Linda.

The Cavs” previous number-one seed, Kyle Nielson transferred to Pleasant Grove, so the team hopes to rely on seniors Marissa Fullum-Campbell and Emily Repsher for leadership.

Patricia Jacobsen takes over as head coach, another change to the program after former coach Lonnie Nielson’s departure. The team holds morning practices at Rio Del Oro.

The Cavs’ next game is today at Center.
