Grads go Batty over new movie

Layers of face paint, a green-and-purple suit, a burned face and an inch-thick rubber body glove adorned three Country Day graduates on the night of July 17.

Kyle McNally, Omar Eltorai and Prentice Gede, ’08, had been looking forward to the release of “Batman, The Dark Knight,” since the trailer first came out.

“We decided to dress up because [dressing up] was so ridiculous, dorky and stupid,” McNally said.

McNally put together his Joker costume for $20 with pieces from the Goodwill and Decades Costumes on Del Paso Blvd.

“It took me about half an hour to gel and spray my hair [and] put on my make-up and costume,” McNally said.

Eltorai rented his costume from Decades at $40 for four days.

The Batman ensemble included a skintight leotard, a rubber chest piece, chaps, codpiece, shoe covers, belt, arm pieces, mask and a pair of bat wings.

“Because everything was rubber, I could only wear the suit for about 20 minutes at a time before I was extremely overheated,” Eltorai said. During the movie he took off the rubber accessories, he said.

Gede dressed up as the character Two-Face, which required a costume with a man dressed half wacky and half normal.

“Lana [Preszler, ’08] sewed two suit jackets on top of each other with a sewing machine and then cut the opposite halves off,” Gede said. “She did the same thing with the pants, shirt and tie. I mismatched my own shoes and did my burn-mark makeup.”

Some viewers at the midnight showing asked to take pictures with the three characters and were very supportive.

“The only negative comments we received were, ‘You guys are way too devoted!’ and then someone else yelled, ‘Freaks!’” McNally said. “Considering we were actually making fun of ourselves, we were expecting a lot more badgering; it was a little disappointing.”

The three felt the movie was deserving of their enthusiasm.

“I’ve seen it four times, and we’re going to San Francisco soon to see it in IMAX,” McNally said. “When the third one comes out, I will definitely be dressing up again.”
