Each time Tiernan Cutler spiked the ball against Cornerstone Christian, the crowd erupted.

But the players were even more jazzed when they came back from being down 2-1 to beat Cornerstone 3-2 at the Oct. 13 homecoming game.

“[Winning the game] was the best feeling ever, especially being a senior,” Cutler said, brightening up at the thought. “Our team really came together at the end. The crowd and the team were into it.”

After trailing two games to one the varsity girls dominated in game five, winning 15-5.

“[The game] was truly awesome,” receptionist Erica Wilson said. “They totally took it away in the third. Everyone was cheering really loud.”

The game was the girls’ second league win, after their victory against Sacramento Adventist the day before. Despite a preseason record of 5-3, the team had struggled in its first three league matches, losing 0-3, 0-3 and 1-3.

Now after back-to-back victories against Adventist and Cornerstone, the team seems to have rebounded.

“We started off kind of slow,” sophomore Emily Repsher said. “Since then we’ve jelled. We trust each other more.”

The team also has begun to practice at 7 a.m.. However, according to Cutler, only six people showed up to the one morning practice the team has had so far.

Three players have been injured or sick so far this season. Repsher missed a week and a half due to a knee injury; senior Ally Bell missed two weeks of preseason due to a knee injury; and senior Aly Opper missed a week and a half because she was sick.

“Hopefully, with a better turnout for the second half they will play [to] the ability that they are capable of,” coach Brian Contreras said.

Having a player out affected the team against Valley Christian during the game on Oct. 17, when Cutler missed the game due to an illness. The girls lost 3-2.

Today, the Cornerstone varsity team will be seeking revenge from the girls, who will play at Cornerstone.
