Walking thorough West Brook’s hallways, a person can see a diverse arrangement of students. The student’s vary in race and culture, and some may not speak English as their first language. These students need help with their knowledge of the English Language. Therefore, West Brook has an ESL, English as a second language, class.
“All my exchange students are wonderful assets to our campus,” ESL teacher Susan Nichols said. “They’re all eager to learn. They all bring a diverse background of experience. They’re interested in meeting all the students at West Brook, and participating in school activities.”
The students receive benefits from the ESL class.
“It helps me in my other English course,” junior Claudia Mill said. “It helps with compound, complex, and simple tenses.”
Mill said that ESL also helps her with writing and literature interpretation.
During the class the students learn grammar and vocabulary, and practice speaking, reading, and comprehension.
The exchange students that take ESL enjoy West Brook.
“I like the teachers and students,” sophomore Orlando Compean said. “They [teachers] know how to teach.”
Junior Emy Petterson likes West Brook.
“I like it because it is big,” Emy said. “And something is always happening. They have a high school spirit.”
The students wanted to learn English because of its benefits. They feel that English is a very important language in the world. They know that knowledge of the language can help them in their future and further their future careers.
