Baseball held the first ever West Brook Baseball Golf Tournament on Jan 18. The event was to benefit the baseball program and to raise funds for equipment.
“The golf tournament was a huge success,” senior and varsity player Aaron Morgan said. “We had over 20 teams playing, and everyone had a great time.”
In the tournament, one team consisted of three or four members, simply playing throughout the day. Prizes were given out for first place and various other events.
“My brother, his friend, and his father-in-law actually ended up winning the tournament,” Varsity Coach Jacob Walton said. “Overall, it was just a really fun day and really great for our program. Many players participated, and some of them even won some of the smaller awards.”
Funds raised from the tournament are going to be used to improve the fields and baseball facilities on campus.
“With this money and money we’ve raised in the past, we’ve been able to put up a brick backstop and netting,” Morgan said. “Our field looks better than ever, and I can’t wait to play on it.”
After the tournament, the participants and baseball players had a cookout and stuck around to support the two seniors, Aaron Morgan and Connor McDonald, as they signed to play in college.
“We are really proud of Aaron and Connor,” Walton said. “I was really glad they decided to sign there with everyone around them.”
The tournament also brought back alumni members of the Bruin Baseball program. Among the participants were ex- Bruins David Murphy, Mark and Michael Cerna, and Jay Bruce, who is on the St. Louis Cardinals. Clay Buckholtz, who plays for the Boston Red Sox, also attended.
