All good things must come to an end. The West Brook Lady Bruin basketball team was defeated in the regional round of the state playoffs against the Fort Bend Hightower Hurricanes. The Bruins fell short to Hightower on two separate occasions this year, the more recent loss coming on Friday, February 21. West Brook put up a fight, but was defeated 58-26. West Brook finished the season with a superb overall record of 26 wins, 8 losses, along with the 22-5A-district title and advancing through the area round of playoffs. Several individuals among the team were rewarded with all-district awards, along with Coach Jessie White being named the 22-5A coach of the year.

The Lady Bruins received a first round bye due to them winning the district. After an extra week of preparation, West Brook defeated Galena Park North Shore 50-42. The Mustangs were a familiar team to play considering they were district opponents last year.

Advancing past the area round, the Lady Bruins would pull off some last minute heroics which included a clutch pair of free throws from sophomore Peaches Hopkins. West Brook would defeat another Houston area team in Houston Memorial by a score of 38-33. Unfortunately, the Bruins would then face one of the hottest streaking teams in the state, the Hightower Hurricanes. Hightower is West Brook’s only opponent that actually had as much size down low as the Bruins.

“They killed us with their man defense. They also shut us down offensively in the post, this was the first time we had that problem,” junior Kim Gatlin said.

Gatlin did lead the team in the scoring department with 11 points. Although the season ended on a loss, the team’s success keeps on coming. Last week the Lady Bruins had seven players named to the All-District team, with the addition of coach White winning the coach of the year award.

“ I hated ending the season on a loss, especially against Hightower, ” junior Katlyn Ferguson said, “But this will only help us in the long run, by giving us more motivation to outdo this finish.”
