This last fall their was a new face among the staff a Free State High School, this new face was the new history teacher Andrew Nussbaum. The soccer team was the first to get to know Nussbaum as the new Junior Varsity soccer coach.

“Mr. Nussbaum’s personality has the capability of rocking one’s world time after time,” junior soccer play Alex Clayton said. Although this is Nussbaum’s first year officially at Free State some people may remember him when he was a student teacher for Kelly Barker and a soccer volunteer at Free State during his college years while attending the University of Kansas.

“I decided to become a teacher because of my background and because I number one goal is too help people,” Nussbaum said.

He is not the only teacher in his family, his older brother is a fifth grade teacher in Topeka and his grandma was also a teacher. Nussbaum grew up in Wichita, Kansas he attended Wichita North High School. He has two brothers the older one Tim and the young one Jesse who is still in college. His parents are Larry and Cheryl Nussbaum.

“Both my parents are in professions that help people which made me want to help people,” Nussbaum said of his parents. According to Nussbaum, although the soccer coach position was one of the main reasons he applied for the job here at Free State, he does not plan to leave any time soon even if he get offered a head coaching job at another high school.

“I love Lawrence and the relationships that I have made with the staff and the students here,” Nussbaum said. “I still have a lot to learn about teaching and coaching, but I will keep the possibility in mind for sometime down the road.”

Nussbaum has been popular among the student body a Free State but according to him, he doesn’t not want to be liked because his is easy.

“In high school I had a lot of good teachers who I liked because they challenged me, and I love it when kids comeback to me and say they liked me even though my class was challenging, but I also don’t want to be serious all the time, I like to learn and laugh during class discussions,” Nussbaum said.
