No ID, no off campus. This is
what several students have been hearing over the past few weeks due to a sudden inane enforcement of school policy.
Recently, the administration has imposed an ID check during lunchtime for all cars leaving campus, sporadically checking the Junior, Senior and Activities parking lots. The checks are completely random, with various days and parking lots used. This unpredictable system makes it hard for prohibited students to sneak off.
According to assistant principal Scott Hansen, one reason for the sudden checks is the student ID cards, just received more than halfway through the school year.
Hansen also reminds students of the School Board policy, stating that no freshmen or sophomores are allowed to go off campus for lunch. Though some freshmen and sophomores who are old enough to drive are allowed to use the campus for parking, they are still not legally able to leave the campus during lunchtime.
Some complaints have been heard around school that the checks cut into the already much restricted 37-minute lunch period.
Hansen discards these rumors, saying that seniors he has spoken with are actually happy about the checks. The students report that the lines in the fast-food places aren’t as long due to the decrease in the number of cars off campus.
The bottom line is, the checks are a waste of time, both for students going to lunch off campus and for the administrators who check them. After all, do the administrators and hall monitors not have anything better to do than sit around for two hours, squandering their time checking IDs?
Just like last-year’s short-lived hallway checks, we’re sure that this will be no different. The bouncers will soon tire of sitting in their cushy golf-carts, and the ID checks will be no more.
