Construction becomes destruction: Development should not destroy the beauty of our city
Advertising
On my daily walk home from school, the annoying beeping of bulldozers clearing out an area off Conner Boulevard for more apartments interrupted my thoughts. I stepped over the mud that covered the sidewalk.

When I first moved into the Piney-Z subdivision, I could see a lovely wild area with flowers and bunnies from my home. Unfortunately, now when I look outside, I see two new houses that look just like the other houses in the subdivision. There are homes in my neighborhood that have been for sale for up to two years, but construction companies continue to build more houses that end up just sitting there.

Constructing new homes when there are already enough is completely pointless.

The number of newly constructed homes sold from June 1 through Aug. 29 of this year has dropped by 22 percent since the same time last year, according to the Tallahassee Board of Realtors. Trulia online reported in the beginning of October there were 618 residential homes on sale in the Tallahassee area. If there are homes on the market, then why are we continually building more?

Maybe we are destroying trees and therefore animals’ habitats only to provide jobs. Construction firms hire many workers — 681 for residential projects alone in 2003, and I do not think these hard-working people should lose their jobs. I also understand that there is an environmental committee that meets once a month at Tallahassee City Hall to protect canopy roads from being developed. This committee of citizens saves some important wildlife as well.

I still believe that it is the job of Tallahassee citizens to keep the city beautiful with its canopy roads, giant oaks and fields of wildflowers. Let’s don’t destroy our environment for the sake of construction.
