There is a rumor that lacrosse has been an underachieving program throughout the history of the sport at Gaithersburg High School. Until the last two years, the team had never had a winning record.
The sport has gradually increased in popularity, and the team has gradually increased in talent and experience.
In the last two seasons, the team has gone .500 in the regular season and last year made it to the second round of the playoffs before losing to North Carroll.
The Trojans mainly consisted of sophomores and freshmen starting at all different postions during those two seasons.
This year, the Trojans’ boys lacrosse team might have found the right combination of experience, strength of schedule and determination for those seniors and juniors who have watched this school turn their lacrosse team into something to be proud of and a team to be feared all around the county.
This season, they are loaded with talent and ready to work to achieve their goal of making states.
The team’s ferocious attack-men are sophomore Bennett Cord, senior Mark Kolodne, and juniors Mike Greaney and Shawn Johnston.
The midfield consists of seniors Ian Swaim and Bud Oakley and juniors Trevor Curtin, Derek Cord, Chris Smith and Richard Mills.
The defense is led by juniors JJ Maloney and Pat Smith, sophomore Matt Bell and freshmen Ben Christopher and Zach Maurer, while senior Nick Curtin has moved to goalie this year.
This team has an excellent blend of experience and youth with an extraordinary amount of talent. The players to really watch this season include juniors Curtin, Maloney and sophomore Cord.
Curtin plays midfield and has an exceptional blend of quickness, defense and a superior shot.
Cord is a very young and talented attack-man. He had a great season last year and expects to expand on that this season. One of the only starting defensemen returning this year is junior Maloney. He is going to have to control his teammates on defense this year.
The team will play Watkins Mill, Blake, Rockville, Wheaton and Paint Branch.
This year’s team really does have the drive and the experience to go extremely deep into the Mayland 4A State playoffs.
Look for GHS Lacrosse to bring a swagger to the school come spring time and end up as the best at GHS!
