Where did all the time go? More than the first three months of my “year” are already over and I feel like my life passed by without me really noticing it. The end of the first quarter, Halloween and the Open House came and passed before I could even realize. The things that really let me know I arrived in America are my cell phone ringing in the most inappropriate situations and my new eating habits making me be worried about what I will look like after another seven months.

The rest of the time, I am busy with doing my homework. I am happy about every holiday that brings a bit of a change, so, Halloween was a welcome deviation from my routine. Even though I was already familiar with carving pumpkins and handing out candy to little children (CHILDREN only) the American Halloween was an issue of its own for me. Weeks before the actual celebration, people started to try and out-perform each other with their decorations. Of course, parties were a long time in coming as well. I spent the Friday night before Halloween with friends from YFU, my exchange organization, where wearing a costume was a requirement to be let into the party. Also, in school a lot of kids dressed up for this special event. Amazingly, all of this didn’t stop after October 31 as spirit week started just six day afterwards. For me, someone who has never had a homecoming dance and all the events that come with it, this was an exceptional experience.

The school spirit the students showed during spirit week entertained me so much that I, on Friday the last day of spirit week, painted my face burgundy and gold! Too bad that it is all over now - it was great fun.

One thing that spirit week did bring me for sure was the desire to take it home to Germany and establish it in my school! I’ll never forget this week and all that it brought out in me.

High School aus Deutscher Sicht

Wo ist die Zeit geblieben? Ueber drei Monate ‚meines’ Jahres sind um und ich fuehle mich, als waere mein Leben in letzter Zeit voellig an mir vorbeigegangen. Das erste Quartal, Halloween und Tag der offenen Tuer kamen und gingen bevor ich es realisieren konnte. Dass ich wirklich in Amerika angekommen bin, merke ich hauptsaechlich darean, das mein Handy in den unpassendsten Situationen klingelt und meine Essgewohnheiten mich bangen lassen, wie ich nach weiteren sieben Monaten aussehen werde. Ansonsten bin ich fast ausschliesslich mit Hausaufgaben beschaeftigt, und freue mich ueber jeden freien Tag, der etwas neues bringt.

Dabei war Halloween eine besonders wilkommene Abwechslung. Auch wenn es mir aus Deutschland schon kannte, Kuerbisse zu schnitzen und kleine Kinder (und wirklich nur KINDER) an der Haustuer mit Suessigkeiten zu versorgen, war das Amerikanische Halloween eine Angelegenheit fuer sich. Schon Wochen vor dem eigentlichen Fest uebertrafen sich Nachbarn mit ihren Dekorationen. Und Partys liessen auch nciht auf sich warten. Also verbrachte ich den Freitagabend mit Freunden von YFU, meiner Austausch Organisation, wobei Verkleidung Pflicht war. Und auch in der Schule sah ich viele, die die Moeglichkeit nutzten, aus dem Alltagstrott auszusteigen.

Dieses Geschehen ging in der naechsten Woche weiter mit der ‚Spiritweek’. Fuer mich, die ich noch nie Homecoming und die ganzen Veranstaltungen drumherum erlebt hatte, etwas ganz besonderes. Der „School Spirit“ den die Schueler hierbei entwickelten, war so mitreissend, dass ich jetzt, am Freitag, soweit war, mein Gesicht in den Schulfarben zu bemalen . Schade, dass es schon vorbei ist. Aber eines ist sicher: Schnell werde ich das nicht vergessen, und sobald ich wieder in Deutschland bin wird Spirit Week in meiner Schule eingefuehrt!
