Kicking the path to victory started a little late.
The co-ed soccer season was supposed to start November 18, but they started their season the following week with their first two games cancelled against SACA and south gate.
“Due to holidays and refs not showing up, it affected the team positively because they had more practices,” Coach Deedrick Martinez said.
The lobos won their first game against Fenster High School on December 2 by one point, scoring 2-1.
The winning goal was scored by Junior Defender, Jorge Hernandez.
“I felt great because it gave the team victory, and victory meant something to us,” Hernandez said.
Players expected to win.
”I knew we were going to win the game because we were all excited and motivated to play,” Sophomore Defender Miguel Maldonado said.
Coach Martinez doesn’t have any certain captains he likes to switch it up every so often.
Returning players are Junior Antonio Nuñez, mid fielder; Junior Luis Melendez, mid fielder; and Junior
Antonio Quintero, goalie.
There are 14 players on the soccer team and of those, three of them are female: Senior Alexandra Romero, forward; Freshman Valeria Romero, midfielder; and Sophomore Jamie Kunzman, midfielder.
The team expects to play hard, win games, and make it to the championships, but they feel as if they need more practice.
“I expect us to have a better season then last years,” said Quintero.
The team won their second game against Ha:san by 5 goals on December 8, 5-0.
The Lobos lost the third game against ACPA, 0-2, now with a record of 2-1 to start off the season.
“The team has high expectations,” Coach Martinez said. “It’s up to their efforts and their dedication.”
The next game is against Vail at the Kino Center today at 4:00 p.m.
The Lobos will continue to play their games on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4:00 p.m. until January 20, 2009.
