A slow song plays and kids hit the wall. Arabian Nights like these led to a slow four hours. The mobs of dancers came in waves and at times the dance floor was painfully bare. Not only were the crowds painful, but also the music. The DJ seemed trapped in some time portal halfway between school and present overplayed music. More often than necessary came the country, pointing out our Appalachian status.

“We needed more rap. And the new stuff too, not this stuff we’ve heard over and over,” claims senior Joan Miller. “Last year’s music was definitely better.” Miller is a fan of dancing and was highly disappointed when she could hardly partake in the routine of dragging her friends to the dance floor to crump to some good music.

Not alone in her disappointment, senior Lantz Patterson admitted he was let down in the music selection. “I just wanted some more hip-hop, not that I really care, I found other ways to make a fool out of myself.”

When asked if he enjoyed last year’s music more than this year he merely shouted his answer to me across the lunchroom, “I don’t even remember what I had for breakfast this morning.”

Negative views aside, not all prom-goers were dissatisfied. Senior Donnie Kirkland confessed, “I enjoyed the music. How can you not love ‘Baby Got Back’? Come on.”

Yes, “Baby Got Back” seemed to grab many kids’ attention. When the first few lines screamed through the speaker, dancers lined up to shake it. “Oh my Go, I loved that song!” said senior Maren Schlarb. “That and ‘Jump On It.’ I don’t really dance, but I will when I hear that music.”

Schlarb also enjoyed the music of Saturday night and though she’s not a fan of proms, she enjoyed watching how crazy people got on the dance floor.

So, DJ, if you’re reading this, congratulations on a 50 percent satisfaction rate, because you can’t please everyone, especially high school kids. I appreciate your bravery of being stuck in a small room full of hundreds of high school kids for over four hours. But a word to the wise and a tip for next year, please reconsider when contemplating Spice Girls.
