As I walked down the hallway the other day I witnessed a few students racing down the hall. Tipping each garbage can they passed onto the floor, as they ran out of the school. I bent down to pick up the garbage can. I thought, “Why am I picking this up?” I wish I would have yelled at those students, but I am not a teacher; I am a student and they would have never listened to me. In the hallways students I walk past are always talking about other students. Rumors are spread to tear others down. Making fun of someone because they have a distinct odor or can’t afford name brand clothing is wrong. I don’t understand how students can be so rude to their fellow classmates. I want people to start thinking about what they say before they say it. Some are pessimistic about life. I don’t understand it. There are so many wonderful things that can happen in a person’s life if they just simply try. Anyone can live the life they want as long as they strive to get where they want to be. There are some very generous students in our school who try their hardest to be the best students they are able to be. I notice them and I just want others to start noticing them too. The students who are reading this rant of mine are most likely the students I see being the respectful ones, by reading this you are showing respect and the fact that you care about our school and support our opinions in the Ahlahasa. I thank all of you for choosing to read my opinion. The way parents raise their children plays a huge role in how children act. I have grown up in a family that goes by the motto, “Treat others how you would like to be treated.” As parents they should want to teach their kids to be respectful. We have tremendous advantages at ALHS that we take for granted. Our teachers are some of the most well educated for the positions they hold. We are lucky to be students at ALHS because we have so many opportunities at our school. For example, anyone taking college credit classes? Do you pay for them? The answer is, no. Our school is one of the few in Minnesota that offers AP classes. There are so many events that go on at our school and others schools around us don’t have the same opportunities. I think sometimes students and community members forget what Albert Lea has to offer. We are lucky to have passed our referendums because other districts are suffering now because of failed referendums. That’s why we need to respect our school and community. The way students act is a choice. People who care aren’t going to be the students tipping over garbage cans. All I am asking is to think about what you say or do before you actually act on it.
