Six inducted into the Abingdon High School Hall of Fame

Six members were inducted into the Abingdon High School Hall of Fame on Friday, Oct. 7. The hall of fame was established by the AHS Alumni Association to recognize and honor those individuals who have distinguished themselves as graduates of Abingdon High School and/or have made outstanding contributions to Abingdon High School.

James “Crow” Clark, a 1966 graduate of Abingdon High School was a three-sport letterman for four years and a member of the 1965 state runner-up basketball team. Crow has coached midget league football,  youth baseball, basketball, and softball, and he has been a member of the Abingdon Volunteer Fire Department for 45 years.

Don Cumbow was a member of Abingdon High School’s first freshman class. He became a teacher and coach in Washington County where he served for 37 years. He continues to coach cross country and he has led the boys to 10 district titles and four region titles and the girls to 21 district titles and nine regional titles.

Glenna Holmes came to Abingdon High School in 1982 as bookkeeper for the school. In 1998, she earned the Certified Professional Secretary certification through the International Association of Administrative Professionals, and in 1990 she was named administrative assistant. She is a 2001 recipient of the Lifetime Membership Award of the AHS Athletic Boosters.

Sandra Blair Jonas is a 1965 graduate of Abingdon High School. She served as an English teacher at AHS from 1972 until her retirement in 2002. She also served as sponsor of various school organizations and as the chairman of the English department.  She was chosen as the 1999-2000 Secondary Teacher of the Year for Washington County Public Schools.

Kerisha Kegley served as music teacher in Washington County from 1981 until her retirement in 2010.

    Under her guidance high school choral students competed all over the east coast and internationally. She holds the record for the largest number of students who auditioned and made All-District Chorus and All-Virginia Chorus. She was nominated as Educator of the Year for eight years, listed in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers, and received the Presidential Citation for two years.

Jeb Stewart graduated from Abingdon High School in 1971 where he lettered in baseball and football. He carried the down-marker for Falcon football for 37 years. He also kept score clock in boys’ and girls’ basketball for over 25 years.

He has been involved in youth sports including baseball, football, and basketball for over 25 years.
