At 7:15 p.m. on the evening of Feb. 2, Lyndsay Brooke Masters, a junior, died in a car collision at 16th street and Bell Road. Police are still investigating, but reportedly believe that speed or traffic signals may have been a factor.

The accident occurred after a westbound vehicle collided with the vehicle she was in when she was attempting to make a left hand turn. Masters is survived by her mother, Lezlie J. masters, Father, Thomas G. Backhuus Jr., and her older sister Annalee J. Masters. The family has requested not to be interviewed for this story.

Lyndsay Masters enrolled here after attending school at North Canyon High School. In the short time that she attended school her, she had made a lasting impression on all those that she met with her smiling face, says many of those that were acquainted to have met her.

“She was a very cool down to the earth person,” says Travis Edward, a junior. “You could always have fun with her.”

Countless teachers and staff are shocked at this awful accident that took such a young life and how they will no longer have her in their classes.

“It is a horrible feeling, not only will she not be in your class and you won’t see her smiling face, but she had her whole life a head of her,” says Anne Elliott, psychology teacher. “I also think of her family and how it would be to lose a child.”

A visitation was held on Feb. 9 at Phoenix Memorial Mortuary and funeral services on the Feb. 10. For those still interested in paying their respects, the cemetery is located at 200 w. Beardesly Rd. off of the interstate 101.

“ The service was beautiful and with pictures of her on the wall as you walk in,” Elliott says. “ There were tons of people, mostly kids.”

The death of Masters came closer to home for no teacher more than Lynn Stewart, Language arts teacher. Masters and her family had a close relationship to Stewart’s extended family.

“ She was focused and goal-driven,” Stewart said. “Her death is a real loss.”
