Lack of healthy lunch choices upset students
Advertising
Every day, students make a mad dash to their all-time favorite class, the highlight of their day - lunch. And my question is for what?

There just seems to be no point in racing to be the first in line for greasy taco bowls that make stomachs turn, pizza that looks as though it has been sitting out for the past 30 minutes or chicken rings made out of something that looks nothing like actual chicken.

I will admit that there are some good choices, taste-wise, that it is. For instance the Subway subs are a great choice, but only if someone is willing to pay $2.75 for six inches of sandwich.

Then again, Subway isn’t even at the top of the food chain when it comes to the prices of food at OHS, but that is all thanks to the Tuesday special.

Yep, that’s right I’m talking about the smoothies, which used to be brought to the school by Jamba Juice at $3 a pop.

However the school recently downgraded to a more expensive (by $1) Keva Juice.

Sadly people, the madness doesn’t end with the juice (oh no, there’s more). The school has successfully suckered the students into paying more money since those wonderful elementary school days, where lunch cost $1.75. It has also become nearly impossible for students (mainly the freshmen who have just stepped out of health class) to eat healthy.

There are many healthy options available in the OHS cafeteria. Unfortunately, students are free to make their own choices and do not always make the healthy choice. Pricing is set at the district level, but meals are reasonably set at $2.00 - $2.50. A la carte items are priced slightly higher, but, once again, it’s the students choice to buy a meal or to buy a la carte, said Linda Sharrett, cafeteria manager.

For instance a person can purchase a doughnut, fries, and a cookie for less than a Subway sub.

“It’s a ridiculous that the healthy foods cost more because if they want us to be healthier they should promote it,” said Laura Keto, sophomore. “Otherwise they’re telling students be healthy, but it’s going to cost more.”

However I must commend the school for trying to provide healthy, well-balanced meals, such as: grilled chicken sandwich, fresh turkey sandwiches, and a variety of gourmet salads. At least they offered us an alternative to the Sardellas (heart attack by the age of 30 ) pizza.

“The healthy choices are the same price as other lunches and in fact, cost less than a pizza and fry combo,” Sharrett said.

In the end, it all comes down to what the consumer will buy. And in this world filled with jumbo sized bags of chips and $20 hamburgers students order a slice of pizza with a side of fries or some other clog my arteries with a side of type 2 diabetes.
