While many high school students spend their days counting down minutes until the school day ends, days until the weekend, weeks until summer vacation, or even years until graduation, Katherine Weingartner, a junior, fills each and every day with uncountable activities.

Weingartner serves as this school year’s student body treasurer and was recently elected student body president for the 2007-2008 school year. She’s in clubs such as National Honor Society, Society of Female Scholars, the Superintendent District Advisory Board and more. Weingartner is in her second year as the Interact Club’s president. She is the secretary of Mu Alpha Theta, which is a club that “tutors students in math...and the members really have a love of math that is nice to see.”

Weingartner explains she also discusses “legislation concerning education and real issues that will affect students now and in the future,” as a member of the school’s Strategic Planning Committee.

Weingartner challenges herself with rigorous AP and honors classes and plans to take a full day next year as a senior.

“With all the things I will be doing after school,” Weingartner said. “I saw no point in going home and then coming back. A full day would allow me to experience different classes for free.”

Holly Batsell, language teacher, says that Katherine “is like the Superwoman of students because she does all AP classes and has to okay every single request for funds that goes through the school since she’s the school treasurer.”

She hopes this involvement will better prepare her for college. Weingartner says she is “being pulled toward politics. Everywhere I turn it finds me.” Though as of now, that along with mathematics and sciences, is just an idea.

She plans on going to college, getting a masters degree, having a family, traveling, and “having a blast living life to the fullest.”

Weingartner says her family is a great support system that she cherishes. She talks to her mom about her hectic days, is really close with her younger brother, and takes after her dad, who is also very involved.

“They are all proud of me and have never pushed me to do anything,” she said

Her boyfriend, Kevin Pounds, a senior, says, “Katherine is one of the most involved girls I know as well as one of the most kind-hearted.”

With so many activities, it’s a wonder that Weingartner can get everything done in a timely manner and still have plenty of time for friends and fun. Unlike many high school students, the word “procrastinate” is not in her vocabulary.

“It’s just easier for me to get stuff done early and out of the way,” Weingartner says, “I make a list of what I have to do, look at it, decide it isn’t so bad, and then start knocking things off the list.”

On a typical weekend she enjoys all kinds of activities from a sports night with guy friends to watching Heroes, hitting up the archery range, and Weingartner says, “My boyfriend and I have been taking swing dancing lessons for about a year, and it’s fun.”

Weingartner says she loves her days in high school and doesn’t wish them to pass any faster or more slowly, though she is definitely looking forward to college.

“Really I plan on seeing where life takes me instead of deciding what I will be doing in 40 years. I will keep my eyes open and find what is right for me.”
