Although relatively young and inexperienced at the beginning of the season, the baseball team is in the midst of a 10-5 season, recently beating an undefeated Madison team 4-2 on Tuesday night.

All four of the team’s runs were scored in the first inning, with starting pitcher Danny Bell and relief pitcher Shane Mills holding off the Warhawks for the rest of the game. Bell pitched the first four innings, giving up only six hits and two runs, and Mills pitched the last two innings, striking out six hitters and giving up no runs. Madison is now 13-1 after the loss, and recently defeated the 13th ranked team in the nation.

“The win against Madison has defiantly given us a lot of confidence,” senior Shane Mills said. “It is especially good because Madison was undefeated and we were their first loss of the season.”

In the team’s second game of the season they lost to Madison 4-5, however, one of the games biggest plays came on a controversial call in favor of the Warhawks.

After a 1-2 start to the season, the team went on to win five games in a row by keeping opponents from generating offense and scoring runs. In the five game stretch the team had a 1-0 shutout against St. Albans, three games where they kept opponents to three runs or less, and a win against Thomas Jefferson where the team scored 11 runs and gave up only six to the Colonials.

All but one of the team’s losses has been decided by one run, the only exception coming in a 3-11 loss to South County.

On April.21 the team defeated Langley for the second time, with a score of 10-4.

When asked what has been key to the team’s success, coach John Thomas was quick to attribute the pitching of seniors Shane Mills, Frankie Cavanaugh, and Danny Bell.

“We have had good pitching when we win. When we pitch well, then it is a lot easier to win games,” Thomas said.

At the beginning of the season offense and inexperience were the team’s two biggest worries; however, Thomas said that inexperience has not really been a problem.

“The younger guys have more experience now than they did at the beginning of the season, and everyone has been playing as hard as they can throughout the year,” Thomas said.

Offensively, Thomas said that he would like to see more consistent hitting from the top of the order to the bottom and more hitters getting on base. He also commented that the team needs to make routine plays in the infield in order to improve.

“If we pitch well, hit up and down the order, and make routine plays, we are as good as anyone,” Thomas said.
