The gymnastics team will do battle against Herndon, South Lakes, and Westfield at Herndon today in the final meet of the regular season.

Despite losing seven returning gymnasts and having a very young team (only three seniors), the team has been very successful and is doing its part in reaching the bar set by last year’s team.

“Our scoring is actually lower than last year,” Coach Becky Blair said. “Teams lost some of their top gymnasts.”

Blair and Kim Dight coach the team. Blair is in her seventh season and Dight is in her ninth.

Led by captains Sarah Wisecup and Katie Brown, as well as junior Rachel Towarnicky, the team is very optimistic going into the last meet, especially because of the success they have been having.

In the team’s five meets so far, it has placed first once and second twice.

“The girls have been doing well, and we’ve really been coming together,” said Wisecup.

Wisecup, Brown, and have been doing their part in helping the younger gymnasts improve themselves and the team.

“They provide guidance with routines,” Dight said. “They help the girls with different elements that they know how to do but that the other girls are still learning.”

At the team’s most recent meet, it managed to put up a season high of 114 points.

“We’re progressing nicely,” Dight said. “We’d like to continue to improve our score.”

In a typical high school girls gymnastics meet there are four events, floor, balance beam, vault, and uneven bars.

A maximum of six girls can compete in each event, but only the top four scores are used. (A ten-point scale is used as in professional gymnastics.) The team ends up with a total of 16 scores, which are then added together and compared with the other teams’ scores to determine the final placing.

As well as team scoring, there is also individual scoring, where the total points of an individual are added up and then compared to the scores of other individuals.

Districts are quickly approaching and will take place on Feb. 4, at South Lakes.

“From now until districts we’re working on routine after routine after routine,” Blair said. “We’re not looking to anything different, just getting the girls stronger and getting their usual routines better.”

The team is looking to do well, but will face some tough competition especially from Woodson and rival Langley.

“There’s a couple of teams we haven’t seen yet,” Dight said. “But there’s a definite chance of us doing well and advancing [to regionals].”
