Since Key Club sponsor Gayle Doane left last year, it seems that McLean’s service clubs have left too. The Key club, along with other service clubs, hasn’t been active until last week.
The only service activity that has been pushed by either the faculty or students so far this year has been the movement to create more recycling.
“We’ve been blessed in this country, and I think it’s important to give back,” said principal Paul Wardinski.
Normally, service clubs meet monthly and help sponsor affiliation with non profit and charity groups. The service clubs have been responsible for collecting canned foods, encouraging blood drives, and giving presents to needy children. All of these charity fundraisers were seemingly nonexistent until the recent realization and collectiveness of past Key Club members.
The Key Club has already had its first meeting but will not meet again until the week after Thanksgiving. The new sponsors are Lori Wagoner and Elizabeth Woo.
“I’m excited about Key Club because over 50 people showed up at the first meeting,” Wagoner said. “I think that shows how eager McLean students are about doing community service...To be honest, no one else wanted to do it, so Ms. Woo and I agreed to co-sponsor the activity.”
Woo said the club is hoping to continue its blood drive in the spring, adopt a family in the winter, and continuing to fundraise for these special events.
The SGA and Key Club will sponsor Friends of Frosty, which helps sponsor a needy family or many children with gifts during the winter holidays. All of the donations will be due by Dec. 10, but the SGA will start to campaign for Friends of Frosty next week.
“It’s always important to give back to those who are in need,” Alex Hubbard, SGA treasurer said. “As a school I think we are very fortunate, and it is important to give back to those who don’t have as much and those who truly need our help.”
