More than enough scares to entertain in 'The Descent'

A year after the deaths of her husband and daughter, Sarah joins friends Juno and Beth on another of their extreme wildlife adventures. This time it is in the Appalachians of North Carolina, where they meet base jumper Holly and Scandinavian half-sisters Sam and Rebecca.

The beginning of the movie was alarming.  Besides the first two satisfying scares involving the old pipe-through the-head trick, we have a cast of six females--rarely done in horror movies. It's a little like a Lifetime drama until the plot begins.

The plot is simple but open to unimaginable events. The plan is to explore a cave, a tourist attraction, but the egotistic Juno decides to take the excursion to another level by defying the map and taking a trail of her own.

Once inside the cave, there's a little sight-seeing until the exit route is cut off. Then comes the trouble. They're trapped, with no help, and one is injured. If that weren't enough, they're seeing little pale men and falling into bone pits.

The acting is believable, and there are more than enough scares to entertain.  You'll jump up and grab the one next to you, no matter if you know the person or not. (4 stars)
