Chbosky's book examines teenage life
Advertising
Stephen Chbosky's debut novel, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, is a fascinating look into high school life from the point-of-view of Charlie, a wallflower and an outsider.

Through a series of letters to an unknown friend, Charlie is witty and comical as he observes his friends and family change and mature. Growing up in the early 1990s, Charlie's love of The Smiths, mixed tapes and The Rocky Horror Picture Show makes him seem like an average high school kid.

Charlie shares glimpses of life with the readers. He struggles with just trying to get by in high school and learning to navigate through the unknown territory of first crushes and new friends. Charlie's experiences with first love, sex and drugs make him easy to relate to for many adolescents.

Although The Perks of Being a Wallflower is classified as a teen book, adults may also enjoy this novel. I highly recommend the book for anyone looking for a mature "young adult" read. (3 stars)
