'Date Movie' lacks any plot and relies on potty humor

Aaron Seltzer's Date Movie was pro-moted as the hilarious product of two of the six writers of Scary Movie. However, after 80 minutes of stupid, second-grade humor, it was obvious the film could have used the other four writers to replicate the hilarity of its predecessor.

The movie certainly had promise and even a few mildly funny scenes, but what Date Movie lacked was a story line. One of the traits that made the Scary Movie<> films so funny was that the parody was wrapped around the basic plot. In contrast, Date Movie was a confusing sequence of events that were barely tied together.

True to the advertisements, Date Movie did poke fun at the numerous date movies that have been produced over the past few years, including Shallow Hal, Napoleon Dynamite and The Wedding Planner. However, in an attempt to point the humorous finger of disdain at the ridiculous romantic comedies out there, the producers of Date Movie simply created a new one.

The story centers on lonely Julia Jones, a buxom young woman who can't seem to find her prince charming. In an effort to make herself more appealing, she visits the famous date doctor, Hitch, who helps her change her physical appearance. After all, whoever heard of women who weighed more than 90 pounds ever finding true love, right?

Julia then goes on a reality show, where she meets her true love. From there, a hodgepodge of scenes from about 20 different movies paraded before my eyes. When the credits finally rolled across the screen, I was left only with an empty tub of popcorn. There was no parting joke or something to take along with me.

If you like films whose only comedy resides in disgusting potty humor, then this movie is right up your alley. Otherwise, I would advise you to select a different date movie for your night out. (one star)
