Student Council sponsored its own Super Bowl last week, when around 40 students competed in the John Madden NFL 2006 Tournament.

Sophomore Eric Shaw won the championship of the tourney.

The event raised money to defray some of the costs of prom for the junior class.

The video-game football tournament took place after school last Monday through Thursday in different classrooms. Players used the Playstation 2 version of the game, which was projected onto five of the school's SmartBoards. This allowed the games to be watched by many spectators.

Junior Angelo Zimbardi, who was eliminated in the third round, thought the fund-raiser was a good idea.

"The tournament is beneficial to each class of the school," he said.

The games had quarters of only two-minutes so they could be played quickly. Some students thought the quarters should have been longer.

Zimbardi was one.

"The rules were fair, but the games should have been longer," he said. "One mistake cost you the game."

Junior Kevin Contrera, a member of student council, thinks the John Madden tourney was a successful event.

"The tournament was a lot of fun," he said. "It was a good fund-raiser for the junior class."
