OSU quarterback strategy creates an unwinnable situation

In the teams' first football meeting ever, Ohio State fell to Texas, 22-25. The Buckeyes gave away one of the most anticipated and hyped games of the entire season, mostly because of their quarterback situation.

Having Justin Zwick and Troy Smith split time is a bad idea that hurts the team. Before the game, in a sideline interview, coach Jim Tressel said Zwick was the starter, but each quarterback would rotate and play two offensive series each.

First of all, how can the Buckeyes establish chemistry when a different guy is leading the team every 20 minutes? They can't and they won't. It's also hard for either quarterback to find rhythm and gain confidence when each is consistently being pulled from the game. The quarterback is the leader of the entire offense. Having two different leaders simply will not work, ever. It's like trying to have two presidents run a country. The one in office will have to try to fix the other's mistakes while worrying that his own performance won't be as good.

It is a completely ridiculous situation that needs to be rectified immediately. Both Zwick and Smith are being pressured to do better than the other, while the coach is saying it doesn't matter who outperforms whom, because they are going to switch every two series, regardless.

This problem really came to a head in the last 90 seconds of the game. Texas had just scored, putting the Longhorns up by one point. It was the most crucial moment of the game, and Zwick ran onto the field. It was of no consequence to Tressel that Smith had outperformed him during the game, or that 19 of the team's 22 points were scored while Smith was on the field. He was going to put in Zwick, because it was his turn. That plan proved to be a bad idea when Zwick tried to run the ball and fumbled, giving Texas the ball at the Buckeyes' 20 yard-line with a minute left.

In the outside world, bosses do not rotate people in jobs, and for good reason. Teachers don't switch off every quarter, doctors don't rotate patients every two visits, and we only have one president. Football is no different. Until Tressel plays the better quarterback and learns to live with the starter's shortcomings as every other coach in America does, his team will be unable to perform to the best of its ability.
