Weather, tough opponents plague boys tennis team
Advertising
Currently sitting with a record of 5-6, the boys tennis team has dealt with frequent postponements and competitive opponents.

The team began well with a 4-1 win at home versus Elyria Catholic April 19. The next day's home match against Padua Franciscan was canceled because of weather, as was the home match against Green April 22.

On April 21, the Knights lost 3-2 in Mayfield against Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin. The Lions consisted mostly of seniors who kept the Knights busy. Junior Brad Wenum had a solid win over his opponent 6-2, 6-0. Another singles win for Hoban came from sophomore David Jenks, who took the match to three sets, winning the first and third, 7-6, 6-4, respectively.

The bad weather was not over as the North Coast League tournament planned at home for April 23 had to be rescheduled for next Saturday.

Senior David Wartko thinks the NCL tournament could have a positive outcome for Hoban.

"Andrew Wenum and I at first doubles could at least get second place," he said. "Brad Wenum could easily win the third singles bracket. He's almost undefeated for the season."

The home match April 26 against Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy was shortened because of rain. The Knights were down 4-0 when the fifth match was called off.

The weather cleared up enough for the Knights to play Cuyahoga Falls at home April 28. Hoban was ahead going into the second match, but the Black Tigers came back and the score was eventually tied 2-2. The game ended in a 3-2 loss for the Knights.

Junior Andrew Gerbetz explained the loss.

"We could have won if we cut down on our unforced errors," he said "We made some mistakes, but we were the better team. Games like that are heartbreaking."

The Dover Invitational scheduled for last Saturday was canceled because of rain. The next game is tomorrow against Lake Catholic at Hyre Park.
