Dear Student:

This is a special time of year, with proms, graduation and other occasions. Unfortunately, some individuals think these events cannot be enjoyed without alcohol.

Those who choose not to drink are to be commended for a wise, mature decision. Those who choose to use alcohol should be aware of some important facts:

Only parents or legal guardians may give alcohol to their own children under 21, and these underage youth can only drink it with parents or guardians present.

Parents cannot give alcohol to their children's friends under 21 under any circumstance--even in their home with the parents' permission. Those convicted of giving alcohol to a person under 21 face six months in jail and a $1,000 fine. Police can take any alcohol, money or property used in committing these offenses.

It is illegal to share the cost of buying alcoholic beverages or attempt to buy alcohol, even if the sale is refused. The maximum penalty for attempting to buy is a fine of $250 and/or up to 30 days in jail. In addition, anyone who purchases alcohol for you, sells it to you, or just gives it to you can go to jail.

Those under 21 caught driving with a blood alcohol concentration between .02 and .08 percent, which can be reached after just one or two drinks, can be arrested. Punishment is suspension of your license for 90 days to two years, plus four points added to your driving record. Having an open container in a motor vehicle is another violation of law.

This spring and summer, undercover agents will increase enforcement in Ohio, arresting those involved with underage drinking. You can help by calling 1-877-4MINORS toll-free and telling us which bars, stores and carryouts sell alcohol to teens.

Have fun without alcohol. Be a friend and encourage your friends not to drink. Keep yourself and your parents out of trouble. Preserve your driving record, health and safety, and enjoy this wonderful time of life. We want you around for many more wonderful times.
